Bring Cash: Real Cash-Only and Cash-Preferred Dives in Chicago and Atlanta

Some rooms still want bills, not plastic. This guide lists dive bars in Chicago and Atlanta where the live All the Dives profile actually says so—cash-only when the catalog tags it cash-only, cash-preferred when it tags cash or says cash-friendly. We do not invent payment rules from Google, memory, or vibes. Same house line as About: we would rather miss a borderline spot than stretch the word.

If a profile is quiet on cards vs cash, we leave it out. Policies change. Bring a little cash anyway and confirm at the door.

Cash-only vs cash-preferred (and the no-guess rule)

Cash-only means the live profile tag or pitch says cash-only / cash only. Expect no card at the rail unless the room has quietly updated—and even then, ask.

Cash-preferred (also cash-friendly, cash discount, cash door, “cash still king”) means the profile signals cash matters, but it is not a hard cash-only claim. Cards may work, may cost more, or may only cover part of the night. Read the profile, then confirm on site.

We only use what is on the catalog page for that bar. No hours invented here. No “I think they take Venmo” from a stale review.

How to confirm tonight

  1. Look for a sign on the door, register, or mirror before you order.
  2. Ask the bartender in one short sentence. Regulars already know; you do not.
  3. ATM fees are a clue, not proof. A machine in the corner often means cash culture; it does not prove the rail refuses cards.
  4. Ignore stale Google payment badges. They lag. The live /bars/ profile is our source; the floor is the final one.

If you get turned away for plastic, that is useful intel—submit a correction so the catalog stays honest.

Chicago cash-only (verified from ATD)

These rooms carry a live cash-only tag (and usually say it in the pitch). Short list, not a census. Neighborhood, one line, link.

North and far north

Cunneen’s — Rogers Park. Canned beer, quiet pool, political ephemera on the wall.

Big Joe’s — Bowmanville. Wood paneling, steel-tip darts, turtle races when they run them.

Casey’s Corner — West Ridge. Devon Avenue corner tavern; Old Style still in the window.

Max’s Place — Uptown. Faded sign, pay phone, CD jukebox, handwritten “Yes, we’re open.”

Green Mill Cocktail Lounge — Uptown. Jazz tavern since 1907; green neon over black tile.

Reed’s Local — Avondale. Club Foot’s heir: Hamm’s-and-a-shot prices and a cheap rail.

Near northwest and west

Inner Town Pub — East Village. 1890 tavern; free pool, free darts, opaque front sign.

Nilda’s Place — East Village. Knock and hope Nilda is in; living-room rail under Cerveza Fría Old Style.

Rite Liquors — Ukrainian Village. Division Street slashie: package goods one side, cash-only rail and pool the other.

The Charleston — Bucktown. Taxidermy chaos, pool, neighborhood-weird on Hoyne. Live tag: cash-only.

Sidekicks — Irving Park. Karaoke, pink-and-aqua neon, dart room.

Fuller’s Pub — Irving Park. No kitchen since 1976; live bands, free lot out back.

Central, Lincoln Park, Loop

Rose’s Lounge — Lincoln Park. Christmas-in-July cottage; wood paneling and a living-room dive.

Sky Ride Tap — The Loop. Commuter dive under the L; same owner since 1972.

Second Story Bar — Streeterville. Gay dive above Sayat Nova; cheap and dim a block off Michigan.

South Side and Hyde Park

Woodlawn Tap — Hyde Park. Jimmy’s since 1948; university and the block share a rail.

Cove Lounge — Hyde Park. Art Deco neon next to the university.

Stanley’s — Back of the Yards. Whiskey Row holdout; homemade comfort food, family behind the bar.

Eighteen verified cash-only rooms is a lot for one city. It is still not every Chicago dive that might want bills tomorrow—only what the catalog currently tags.

Chicago cash-friendly (not hard cash-only)

These carry a live cash tag (or cash-friendly / cash-discount language in the pitch). Treat them as cash-forward, not as guaranteed cash-only.

Old Town Ale House — Old Town. Second City’s unofficial clubhouse; portraits, no food, no nonsense. Tag: cash.

Rossi’s Liquors — River North. Pitch calls it cash-friendly; cooler-and-rail holdout that still looks like 1978. (Not a catalog slashie—see the slashies guide.)

Richard’s Bar — River West. Italian-flag awning, Rat Pack jukebox, hard-boiled eggs. Tag: cash.

Rainbo Club — Ukrainian Village. Photo booth, curved bar, after-hours magnet. Tag: cash.

Bernice’s Tavern — Bridgeport. Buzz-in room; bartender still runs the door. Tag: cash.

Newark Nook — Norwood Park. Beer garden; pitch says cash still king. Tag: cash.

The Levee — Hermosa. Pitch: cash-friendly; pool, darts, popcorn. Tag: cash.

Double Bubble — Edgewater. White Sox bar; cash, dogs, chips, mixed fandoms. Tag: cash.

Green Eye Lounge — Logan Square. Cheap Old Style, pinball, and a cash discount. Tag: cash.

The Double — Logan Square. “CASH IS KING” on the mirror. Tag: cash.

Ravens — Lincoln Park. Late-night cheap beer; a CASH sign at the wood rail. Tag: cash.

Podlasie Club — Avondale. Polish social-club bones, pool, weird late sets. Tag: cash.

Bring cash to these rooms and you will rarely be sorry. Do not tell your friends they are “cash-only” unless the door says so when you arrive.

Atlanta: thin verified set (and what we refuse to claim)

Atlanta’s catalog is thinner on payment tags. We keep the list honest.

Cash-only (ATD)

Clermont Lounge — Poncey-Highland. Oldest strip club in town and a cash-only basement tourists still cannot quite explain. Live tag: cash-only. (It counts here the same way the about page allows: a worn room that still works as a bar first.)

Cash signal, not hard cash-only

Blind Willie’s — Virginia-Highland. Blues closet; live tag cash, pitch says cash door. That is a door/cover signal, not a catalog claim that every drink is cash-only. Confirm at the window.

Not claimed from ATD payment tags

Atlanta Eagle — Ansley / Piedmont Heights. Pitch mentions “neon, cash, and late-night community,” but there is no cash or cash-only tag on the live profile. We do not upgrade atmosphere language into a payment policy. Ask on site; do not cite this guide as proof.

We also do not claim cash-only or cash-preferred for Northside Tavern, The Righteous Room, or other Atlanta names that float online without an explicit ATD payment tag. If you have a receipt, a door photo, or a bartender confirmation, submit it.

Why cash still shows up

Small rooms keep fees low. Older owners never wired a reader. Some crowds tip better when the till is a drawer. Slashies and corner taverns grew up on cash culture—see Chicago’s real slashies for the dual liquor-store/rail cut.

Cash is not a personality test. It is a floor rule. Bring it, confirm it, leave when you are done.

What does cash-only mean on All the Dives?

The live profile uses a cash-only tag or says cash-only / cash only in the pitch. That is the bar we use in this guide. It is still worth confirming at the door the night you go—tags can lag a policy change.

What about cash-preferred or cash-friendly?

Those rooms have a cash tag or pitch language like cash-friendly, cash discount, cash door, or cash still king. They are not listed as hard cash-only. Cards may work; cash may be cheaper or required for cover only. Read the profile, then ask.

How do I confirm before I order?

Sign on the door or register, one question to the bartender, and skepticism toward stale Google payment badges. Nearby ATMs suggest cash culture; they do not prove the rail refuses cards. If the catalog is wrong, submit a correction.
